What OHIP covers for obesity care in Guelph
Two questions usually arrive together: will OHIP pay for the visits, and will it pay for the medication? They have different answers, and keeping them apart saves a lot of worry.
- Your medical visits Covered by OHIP Assessment and follow-up, insured, by referral.
- Medication Paid separately By a drug plan, a public program if you qualify, or you.
- Anything optional Never required It is never a condition of your care.
Your visits
Are the visits covered by OHIP?
Yes. Your assessment and follow-up at GOALS are insured by OHIP, like any other visit at Guelph Internal Medicine Clinic. Care starts with a referral from your family doctor, nurse practitioner, or another physician, and that referral never routes into any paid service.
How to get referredMedication
Does OHIP cover weight-loss medication?
OHIP pays for your visits. Prescription medication you take at home is paid for separately, in one of three ways.
-
A private or workplace drug plan
Some plans cover medications for weight management and some don’t. Your plan decides.
-
Ontario’s public drug program
The Ontario Drug Benefit, if you qualify and the medication is listed for your situation.
-
Paying yourself
Prices vary by pharmacy and change over time, so none are quoted here.
Who can get the Ontario Drug Benefit?
It is separate from the OHIP coverage that pays for your visits. You may qualify if you are:
- 65 or older
- 24 or younger and not covered by a private plan (this route is called OHIP+)
- living in a long-term care home or a Community Home for Opportunity
- receiving professional home and community care services
- receiving Ontario Works or Ontario Disability Support Program benefits
- enrolled in the Trillium Drug Program
The Ontario Drug Benefit pays for medications listed on its formulary, or approved case by case through the Exceptional Access Program, so qualifying does not mean every medication is covered for every use.
For obesity care specifically: semaglutide is covered for people eligible for the Ontario Drug Benefit who have type 2 diabetes. Medications for weight management alone are not covered. Your doctor and pharmacist can tell you where you stand.
Common questions
Does OHIP cover weight loss programs?
At GOALS, your medical visits are covered: your assessment and follow-up are OHIP-insured. Medication is paid separately, and a few optional services carry a fee; they are listed last on this page.
Is the first visit covered?
Yes. Your first visit is part of your insured care.
Will my insurance cover the medication?
It depends on your plan. Some plans cover medications for weight management and some don’t, and some ask the prescriber for a form first. Your plan’s member line can tell you: ask about the specific medication, and whether a form is needed.
Is it covered if I’m on ODSP or Ontario Works?
Those programs give you access to the Ontario Drug Benefit. It covers semaglutide for people who have type 2 diabetes; medications for weight management alone are not covered. Your pharmacist can check for you.
Do I have to buy anything to be seen?
No. Your care is never conditional on a purchase. Choosing none of the optional services changes nothing about your appointments, your treatment or your place in the schedule.
Forms, letters and missed appointments
Forms and letters that OHIP does not insure, such as sick notes, insurance and disability forms, and copies of records, carry a fee. So do missed or late-cancelled appointments. Each is listed by name, with its fee, on the clinic’s uninsured services page. None of them is a condition of your care.
If you want them
Optional services
Your appointments, your assessment and your follow-up are covered by OHIP. If you choose none of the services below, your care is exactly the same: the same appointments, the same treatment, the same place in the schedule.
- Body-composition scans. Optional. How the scan works.
- Consults with a registered dietitian. Coordinated with your medical plan, and invoiced after your appointment.
